Wedding ceremony songs: ideas for every moment

The ceremony music is what people remember: it plays as you walk in, when you're moved and as you walk out married. Here are ideas for every moment and how to choose them.

A ceremony has five or six musical moments, and each one needs something different: calm while guests arrive, emotion for the entrance, something soft during the readings and joy for the exit. Thinking about it moment by moment makes it much easier.

1. The moments of the ceremony

  1. While guests arrive (15–20 minutes): gentle background music that doesn’t compete with conversation.
  2. The entrance: the star moment. A recognisable, moving piece.
  3. Readings and vows: silence or a very soft melody in the background.
  4. The ring exchange or the signing: a song that’s special to you, 3 or 4 minutes long.
  5. The exit: upbeat and joyful — you’re married!

2. Song ideas for every moment

For the processional

  • Canon in D — Pachelbel. The timeless classic.
  • A Thousand Years — Christina Perri. The modern processional standard.
  • Turning Page — Sleeping at Last. One of the most requested ceremony songs right now.
  • Until I Found You — Stephen Sanchez, with a nostalgic, vintage feel.
  • Perfect — Ed Sheeran.
  • Bridal Chorus (“Here Comes the Bride”) — Wagner, for a traditional entrance.

For the signing of the register

  • At Last — Etta James. A timeless wedding classic.
  • Make You Feel My Love — Adele, a favourite for the signing.
  • You Are the Reason — Calum Scott.
  • Can’t Help Falling in Love — Elvis Presley.
  • Air on the G String — Bach, or Clair de lune — Debussy, if you prefer instrumental.

For the recessional

  • Here Comes the Sun — The Beatles.
  • Wedding March — Mendelssohn, back in fashion as a recessional.
  • Signed, Sealed, Delivered — Stevie Wonder.
  • Best Day of My Life — American Authors.
  • This Will Be (An Everlasting Love) — Natalie Cole.

A Spanish touch, for a wedding in Spain

  • Romance anónimo or Recuerdos de la Alhambra — Tárrega, on Spanish guitar: a beautiful nod to where you’re getting married.
  • Your favourite songs arranged for Spanish guitar.
  • A rumba for the recessional, if you want to end with a party.

Church or civil ceremony: in a church, solemn and recognisable pieces work best, and the repertoire should be checked with the parish. In a civil or symbolic ceremony you’re completely free.

3. Which format to choose

  • String quartet or trio: elegant and versatile; plays classical pieces and pop covers.
  • Guitar (and voice): warm and intimate, perfect for outdoor ceremonies and small weddings.
  • Piano: if the venue has one, or with a digital piano.
  • Solo violin or cello: delicate, for small ceremonies.
  • Voice with guitar or piano: if you want a song with lyrics.

4. Tips so everything sounds right

  • Think about timing. The entrance lasts as long as the walk down the aisle: 1–2 minutes. Musicians can stretch or shorten a piece.
  • Outdoors, add some sound. Wind and open space swallow music and words: a small system with a microphone for the officiant makes all the difference.
  • Ask for special songs early. If you want a song that isn’t in their repertoire, musicians need a few weeks to prepare it.
  • A quick rehearsal. If the musician knows when each moment starts, there are no awkward silences.
  • Check the venue’s rules. Some churches and venues have music or timing restrictions.

A tip from Aleix, musician:

5. Live or recorded music?

Recorded music is cheaper, but live music changes the ceremony: musicians adapt to what happens, stretch a piece if someone is late or bring the volume down at just the right moment. And it looks beautiful in the photos and the film.

We find the musicians that suit your ceremony and coordinate everything: repertoire, timings, sound and soundcheck. And if you don’t know where to start, we’ll bring ideas.
